Our Take

What makes MASTERSON GROUP CAMPGROUND special

Masterson Group Campground sits beneath towering ponderosa pines in the heart of the Mendocino National Forest, California's only national forest without a paved road leading to its interior. That remoteness is part of the appeal. Located near Stonyford in the Sacramento Valley foothills, Masterson offers the kind of expansive, unhurried setting that makes group camping feel like a true escape from the everyday. The campground is defined by its large grassy meadows, which provide generous open space for group activities, games, and communal meals. The surrounding forest of pine, fir, and oak creates a handsome backdrop and offers welcome shade during warm summer afternoons. Wildlife is abundant in this stretch of the national forest, with black-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of raptors making regular appearances. Nearby trails lead into the backcountry for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Masterson is purpose-built for group use, with facilities including picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and ample parking for multiple vehicles. The open meadow layout encourages big gatherings, from family reunions to corporate retreats to scout encampments. Reservations are required and should be booked well ahead of time for summer dates. The best season runs from late spring through early fall, with May and June offering pleasant temperatures and wildflower blooms. If your group wants plenty of room to spread out under big pines and bigger skies, Masterson is an outstanding choice.
