Our Take
What makes Moss Creek campground special
Moss Creek Campground occupies a lush, fern-draped corner of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in southern Washington, where the Little White Salmon River tumbles through a narrow, moss-covered canyon on its way to the Columbia River Gorge. The setting feels almost impossibly green, with towering Douglas fir and western red cedar forming a dense canopy overhead while the sound of rushing water provides a constant, soothing backdrop. Located near the small community of Carson, the campground places you within easy striking distance of the Columbia River Gorge's world-class windsurfing, waterfall hikes, and scenic viewpoints. Closer to camp, the Little White Salmon offers opportunities for fishing and wading, and several forest trails wind through the surrounding old-growth timber. The campground features a modest number of sites suited to tents and smaller RVs, each nestled among the trees for a genuine sense of seclusion. Peak season runs from late spring through early fall, with summer weekends filling up fastest. Reservations are recommended if you plan to visit between June and September. Shoulder season visits in May or October reward campers with solitude and the rich, earthy scent of damp forest floor. For anyone drawn to the lush, rain-fed forests of the Pacific Northwest, Moss Creek is a gem worth seeking out.
