Overview

About North Rim Campground (AZ)

Overview The North Rim Campground is located on the remote and rustic North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona, approximately 210 miles (338 km) from Grand Canyon Village, AZ on the South Rim. It is nestled in a thick ponderosa and aspen forest just on the canyon's edge at an elevation of 8,200 feet. This facility is perfect for tent camping and smaller RVs. Due to its heavily forested location, large and/or high-profile RVs cannot be accommodated. The maximum length in each site description is the combined length of both the RV/trailer and tow vehicle. Many sites are not level and have obstacles such as tight curves and narrow passages through trees. Some sites may not accommodate trailer pop-outs or awnings. The maximum vehicle length permitted on the Cape Royal Scenic Road, Widforss Trailhead, and North Kiabab Trailhead is 22 feet ; plan accordingly if renting an RV if you wish to explore these other areas of the park. Recreation Facilities Natural Features North Rim Campground is shaded by large ponderosa pines interspersed with aspens which turn golden in the autumn as it is situated at over 8,000 feet in elevation; however, it only takes a short walk to peer over the canyon rim to see millions of years of geologic history. The North Rim lies on the Kaibab Plateau, an area that has been uplifted by geologic processes. Many species of wildlife call the Kaibab Plateau home including the tassel-eared Kaibab squirrel which is found nowhere else in the world. contact_info Between 05/15/2024 and 10/15/2024 this location is staffed. Our Take

What makes North Rim Campground (AZ) special

North Rim Campground offers what may be the most exclusive front-row seat in the national park system — the quieter, wilder, and arguably more majestic side of the Grand Canyon. Sitting at 8,200 feet on the Kaibab Plateau, this 125-site campground trades the South Rim's crowds for cool ponderosa pine forests, mule deer browsing between campsites, and a sense of genuine remoteness that makes the 210-mile drive from Grand Canyon Village feel like entering another world entirely. The North Rim receives a fraction of the park's total visitors, yet many who have experienced both sides consider it the superior experience. The canyon views here are deeper and more vertically dramatic, the air is cooler and crisper, and the surrounding forest supports a rich ecosystem including wild turkey, Kaibab squirrels found nowhere else on Earth, and occasional mountain lion tracks along the trails. The campground accommodates tents and RVs up to 40 feet, with flush toilets, drinking water, a dump station, a coin laundry, and shower facilities. The nearby Grand Canyon Lodge offers dining with views that defy description. Reservations through Recreation.gov are highly recommended — the North Rim season runs only from mid-May through mid-October, and the best sites go quickly. Fall is particularly magical, with aspen groves turning gold against the red canyon walls. North Rim Campground is for those who prefer their Grand Canyon wild, uncrowded, and unforgettable.
