Natural Features Located in western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming, Black Hills National Forest encompasses nearly 1.25 million acres of rugged rock formations, canyons and gulches, open grassland parks, tumbling streams, deep blue lakes, and unique caves. Derived from the Lakota language, the words "Paha Sapa," meaning "hills that are black," honor the dark, pine-covered hills rising several thousand feet above the surrounding prairie. Pactola Reservoir is the largest and deepest reservoir in the Black Hills, boasting 14 miles of shoreline and 150 foot depths on 800 acres. The Bureau of Reclamation manages the dam and water. Wildlife in the area abounds. Bighorn sheep navigate mountainous terrain, while elk, deer and pronghorn gather in forests and prairies. Bald eagles, hawks, osprey, peregrine falcon, and hundreds of other bird species can be found in the forest, especially along streams, lakes and rivers. contact_info For facility specific information, please call (605) 574-4402. Our Take

What makes Pactola Reservoir Campground special

Perched among tall ponderosa pines along the south shore of Pactola Reservoir, Pactola Reservoir Campground offers 79 sites with one of the finest lakeside camping experiences in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The reservoir itself stretches over 800 acres and serves as the largest body of water in the hills, its deep blue surface framed by rolling ridges of dark timber. Many sites enjoy filtered views of the water, and a few premium spots sit close enough to hear waves lapping the rocky shoreline. Just a short drive from Hill City, the campground puts you within easy reach of some of South Dakota's most iconic attractions. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Custer State Park are all less than an hour away, making this an ideal home base for a week of Black Hills exploration. On quieter days, the reservoir itself provides excellent boating, swimming, and fishing for rainbow trout, brown trout, and northern pike. With 79 sites ranging from tent pads to full hookup RV spots, the campground can accommodate most setups. Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and popular weekends book up months in advance. Shoulder-season camping in September rewards visitors with golden aspens, cooler nights, and far fewer crowds along the lakeshore.
