Our Take

What makes Paradise Creek campground special

Tucked into the lush river valley where Paradise Creek meets the Wind River, Paradise Creek Campground offers one of the most serene camping experiences in Washington's Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Towering old-growth western red cedar, Douglas fir, bigleaf maple, and red alder form a dense canopy overhead, filtering sunlight into a soft green glow that feels almost primeval. The soundtrack here is water -- the steady rush of the creek mingling with birdsong and the occasional rustle of elk moving through the understory. Sites are well-spaced along the creek, giving each party a genuine sense of seclusion. Most accommodate tents and smaller RVs, though the access road can be narrow in places, so oversized rigs should plan accordingly. Fishing for native trout in the Wind River is a popular draw, and several trailheads nearby lead deeper into the backcountry, including routes toward the Indian Heaven Wilderness. Summer weekends fill up quickly, so midweek arrivals or shoulder-season visits in late May or September reward campers with near-empty loops and cooler temperatures ideal for hiking. The campground typically opens in late spring and closes by mid-autumn, depending on snowfall. Carson, the nearest small town, sits about fifteen minutes west and offers basic supplies, gas, and a handful of local eateries worth exploring.
