Our Take

What makes PASS CREEK CAMPGROUND special

Pass Creek Campground is a quiet mountain retreat on the shores of Jackson Meadow Reservoir in the Tahoe National Forest, just outside Sierraville in California's northern Sierra Nevada. Sitting at roughly 6,100 feet of elevation, this campground offers a distinctly alpine atmosphere with dense conifer forests, cool summer temperatures, and the kind of stillness that makes you realize how loud everyday life has become. The campground is compact and well suited for tent campers and smaller RVs looking for a no-frills mountain experience. Vault toilets are provided, but there are no electric or water hookups at individual sites, so come prepared for self-sufficient camping. The reservoir is within easy reach, and its gin-clear waters are popular for trout fishing, kayaking, and swimming on warm afternoons. A boat ramp in the Jackson Meadow area gives anglers and boaters quick access to the water. Trails thread through the surrounding national forest, offering everything from mellow lakeside walks to more strenuous ridge hikes with panoramic views of the Sierra crest. The Pacific Crest Trail passes through this corridor, opening up possibilities for longer excursions. Camping season is typically late June through September, dictated by snowmelt. Sites generally operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and weekdays offer the best availability. Pass Creek is a fine choice for campers who want a peaceful mountain lake experience without the crowds and commercialism found closer to Lake Tahoe itself.
