Our Take
What makes PATRICK CREEK CAMPGROUND special
Where Patrick Creek meets the crystalline middle fork of the Smith River, you will find one of Northern California's most enchanting streamside campgrounds. Patrick Creek Campground sits within Six Rivers National Forest near the small community of Gasquet, surrounded by towering conifers and lush fern-covered hillsides that feel almost primordial in their beauty. The Smith River holds the distinction of being California's last major undammed river system, and its water clarity is legendary. Swimming holes with emerald-green pools are scattered along the river near camp, and anglers pursue steelhead and salmon during seasonal runs. Kayakers and river swimmers will find gentle stretches perfect for warm-weather dipping, while the surrounding forest trails lead to old-growth groves and panoramic ridgetop views. Patrick Creek Campground offers around a dozen well-spaced sites nestled among the trees, each with a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets are provided, and some sites can accommodate moderate-sized RVs. The historic Patrick Creek Lodge, just a short walk away, serves meals and adds a touch of rustic hospitality to the experience. Reservations are recommended during summer months, particularly on holiday weekends. The best time to visit stretches from late spring through early fall, with June through September offering warm days ideal for river play. Winter visitors may catch the drama of steelhead season, though services are limited.
