Our Take
What makes PIPI CAMPGROUND special
Pipi Campground stretches along the banks of the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California, offering 53 sites in a setting that balances accessibility with a genuine backcountry feel. The river is the star here, tumbling over granite slabs and collecting in pools that are perfect for wading, swimming, and trout fishing. Anglers will find the Cosumnes to be a productive and uncrowded stream, especially during spring and early summer when water levels are ideal. The campground accommodates both RVs and tent campers, with a range of site sizes and configurations that make it suitable for solo travelers, couples, and larger family groups alike. Tall pines and cedars provide welcome shade during warm summer afternoons, and the river soundtrack is ever-present. The surrounding Eldorado National Forest offers miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, and the historic Gold Country towns of Plymouth and Sutter Creek are within driving distance for a change of pace and a taste of local history. Pipi's generous 53-site layout means availability is usually good even during summer, though holiday weekends can fill up. The camping season generally runs from May through October. Spring brings wildflowers and strong river flows, summer offers warm days and cool evenings, and fall adds a palette of changing leaves. For the best fishing, aim for late spring when the water runs clear and the trout are active.
