Our Take
What makes Silver Creek special
Silver Creek Campground near Markleeville, California, is a small, quiet campground on scenic Highway 4 in the eastern Sierra. The camp sits in a transitional zone between the Sierra crest and the Great Basin, where pine forests give way to sagebrush and the air carries a dry mountain crispness. Anglers are drawn here by the nearby East Fork Carson River, a productive trout stream known for its wild rainbow and brown trout populations. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses just three miles west of the campground, making it a convenient resupply or rest point for thru-hikers and a day-hike launching pad for car campers. The town of Markleeville — population roughly 200 — offers a general store and the famous Grover Hot Springs State Park, where natural mineral hot springs provide a soak after a day on the trail. Ebbetts Pass, one of the most scenic and least-trafficked Sierra passes, is a short drive up Highway 4. Fall colors arrive early at this elevation, with aspen groves turning gold by mid-September. The campground is intimate, with sites tucked among the trees, and sees far less traffic than its Lake Tahoe-area counterparts.
