Our Take

What makes Silver Lake Campground (WY) special

Perched at a breathtaking 10,500 feet on the Brush Creek and Hayden Ranger District, Silver Lake Campground is the kind of high-country escape that makes your lungs work a little harder and your worries feel a lot smaller. This is the highest campground on the district, and the payoff for that elevation is extraordinary -- crystalline alpine air, meadows carpeted in wildflower color by midsummer, and views of the Sierra Madre range that seem to stretch into tomorrow. The 17 sites sit near the shores of Silver Lake itself, a gem of cold, clear water ringed by spruce and subalpine fir. Fishing for brook trout is a favorite pastime here, and the surrounding trails open up miles of wilderness for day hikes or longer backcountry adventures. Nights at this altitude are bracingly cool even in July, so bring layers and plan for campfires that feel genuinely necessary rather than merely atmospheric. The season is short -- typically mid-June through September, weather permitting -- so timing your visit is part of the adventure. If you crave thin air, big skies, and the kind of stillness that only comes above treeline, Silver Lake is waiting near Saratoga, Wyoming.
