Our Take
What makes SOQUEL CAMPGROUND special
Soquel Campground is a quiet, no-frills retreat arranged in two loops along the banks of Willow Creek in the Sierra National Forest. Shaded by ponderosa pine and white fir, the sites have a distinctly primitive character -- there are no hookups and amenities are basic -- which is precisely what draws campers looking to escape the noise and polish of more developed campgrounds. The creek provides a gentle soundtrack and, in early summer, enough flow for wading and cooling off on warm Sierra afternoons. The two-loop layout keeps the campground feeling small and manageable, with enough spacing between sites to preserve a sense of solitude. This is a place where you read books by the creek, take unhurried walks through the forest, and let the pace of the day be set by sunlight and birdsong rather than an itinerary. Hiking trails in the surrounding forest range from easy creekside strolls to more ambitious routes climbing into higher-elevation wilderness. Fishing in Willow Creek can be rewarding for patient anglers willing to work the smaller pools and riffles. The campground typically operates from late spring through early fall, and its off-the-beaten-path location means it rarely fills to capacity, even on holiday weekends. Supplies are limited nearby, so come prepared with everything you need. Soquel rewards those who value simplicity and are happy to trade convenience for the unhurried rhythm of a genuine forest camp.
