Our Take
What makes Tangle Lakes Campground special
Tangle Lakes Campground sits at milepost 21.5 on the north side of the Denali Highway, one of Alaska's most legendary and least-traveled road corridors. Within the Delta Wild and Scenic River system, this campground places you in the heart of a vast, treeless alpine landscape where tundra stretches to the horizon and the Alaska Range fills the southern skyline with jagged, snow-draped peaks. The four sites here offer front-row access to some of the best wilderness paddling in the state. The Tangle Lakes chain is a historic canoe route used for centuries, and modern paddlers still launch from nearby to explore the interconnected lakes and the upper Delta River. Fishing for lake trout and grayling is excellent, and the surrounding tundra is rich with caribou, moose, ptarmigan, and grizzly bears. Birders will find the wetlands especially productive during the summer nesting season. The Denali Highway is typically open from mid-May through early October, and the best camping window runs from June through August, when the midnight sun keeps the landscape lit around the clock. The road is mostly gravel, so come with a vehicle suited for unpaved conditions. Facilities are basic, with vault toilets and fire rings, and you should bring all water and supplies. Tangle Lakes Campground is for those who crave big, open landscapes and genuine remoteness. This is Alaska at its most expansive and untamed.
