Our Take
What makes The Dalles Campground special
Set along the banks of the White River deep within Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, The Dalles Campground is a Pacific Northwest classic. The name hints at the rocky river features nearby, where the White River tumbles over ledges and through narrow channels, creating some of the most photogenic water scenery in the region. With 44 sites, The Dalles is one of the larger campgrounds in the area, yet it never feels crowded thanks to the dense forest canopy and thoughtful site spacing. Towering Douglas firs and western red cedars create a cathedral-like atmosphere, and the river access is superb, whether you are fishing, wading, or simply sitting on the bank watching the current. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the broader White River area. Trails lead into the surrounding wilderness, and on clear days, glimpses of Mount Rainier remind you just how grand this corner of Washington truly is. The Dalles is also a popular staging point for hikes along the Pacific Crest Trail corridor. Open seasonally from late May through September, the campground fills reliably on summer weekends, so reservations are highly recommended. Midweek visits offer a quieter experience with more site selection. Facilities include vault toilets and potable water but no hookups, keeping the experience grounded in the simplicity of forest camping.
