Our Take
What makes Walupt Lake Campground special
Walupt Lake Campground occupies a stunning perch on the western shore of Walupt Lake in Washington's Gifford Pinchot National Forest, where the still waters reflect the snow-draped slopes of Mount Adams in one of the most photogenic settings in the southern Cascades. The campground is reached via a winding forest road from the Randle area, and the journey itself is part of the appeal, passing through miles of dense conifer forest before the lake opens up in a dramatic reveal. Private, well-shaded sites sit beneath a canopy of fir and hemlock, many offering filtered views of the lake and the mountain beyond. Fishing for rainbow and brook trout is a major draw, with boat launches available for canoes, kayaks, and small motorized craft. Hikers can access trails that lead into the Goat Rocks Wilderness, one of Washington's most spectacular and underrated alpine areas, where wildflower meadows, glacial tarns, and panoramic ridgeline walks reward those willing to gain some elevation. The campground provides sites for tents and RVs, though the access road may limit larger rigs. The season runs from roughly late June through September, depending on snow conditions. Summer weekends fill up, so advance reservations are recommended. For a lakeside camping experience with genuine backcountry character and one of the finest mountain backdrops in the state, Walupt Lake is an unforgettable destination.
