Our Take
What makes WOODCAMP CAMPGROUND special
Woodcamp Campground occupies a prime stretch of forested shoreline on Jackson Meadow Reservoir in the Tahoe National Forest, making it one of the more sought-after spots in this high-elevation pocket of the northern Sierra Nevada near Sierraville, California. At around 6,100 feet, the campground delivers cool mountain air and direct access to one of the region's prettiest reservoirs. The Forest Service campground features a comfortable number of sites set among tall conifers, with several offering views of or easy walking distance to the water. Facilities are rustic, with vault toilets and no hookups, but the boat ramp nearby makes this a top pick for anglers and paddlers who want to launch right from camp. Jackson Meadow Reservoir produces reliable catches of rainbow and brown trout throughout the summer, and the calm, clear water is a joy for canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. The surrounding Tahoe National Forest provides miles of trails through wildflower-dotted meadows and old-growth forest, and the Pacific Crest Trail is accessible for ambitious day hikers. Evenings at camp are defined by campfire smoke, woodpecker drumming, and some of the darkest skies you will find this close to civilization. The camping season runs roughly from late June to September, snow permitting. Some sites may be reservable, but many are first-come, first-served, so midweek arrivals improve your chances. Woodcamp is a terrific base for a weekend of fishing, hiking, and genuine mountain relaxation.
