Our Take

What makes BALD MOUNTAIN CAMPGROUND special

Bald Mountain Campground sits high along the Medicine Wheel Passage Scenic Byway — US Highway 14A — about 33 miles east of Lovell, Wyoming, in the Bighorn National Forest. The drive in is a destination in itself, climbing through dramatic switchbacks and limestone cliffs before opening onto broad alpine meadows where the sky seems impossibly large. The campground rests among stands of subalpine fir and spruce, with sweeping views of the Bighorn Basin stretching toward the distant Absaroka Range. Just up the road lies the Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark, a sacred Native American stone structure dating back centuries and one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Northern Plains. A visit here adds a layer of cultural depth to any camping trip. Trails in the area range from gentle meadow walks bursting with wildflowers in July to more rugged routes climbing toward the peaks. Wildlife watchers may spot moose, mule deer, and raptors riding thermals overhead. The campground offers a modest number of sites in a quiet, uncrowded setting — this is a place for travelers who value solitude and grandeur over amenities. The season is short at this elevation, generally running from late June through early September. Sites are typically available on a first-come, first-served basis, but arriving by midday on summer weekends is a smart move to claim your spot.
