Our Take

What makes Bottle Creek Campground (WY) special

At 8,800 feet in the Medicine Bow National Forest, Bottle Creek Campground delivers the kind of high-altitude camping experience that makes Wyoming's Snowy Range a destination for those who love thin air and big views. The twelve sites are scattered through a dense stand of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir near Saratoga, with the sounds of Bottle Creek providing a steady, calming backdrop. Up here, summer days are bright and cool, nights dip toward freezing even in July, and the stars put on a show that lower-elevation campgrounds simply cannot match. The Snowy Range Scenic Byway is the main artery into this country, and the drive alone is worth the trip, winding past alpine lakes and wildflower meadows framed by rugged peaks. From camp, anglers can try the creek for small trout, and hikers have access to trails leading into the high basins and ridgelines of the range. Mirror Lake, Lake Marie, and the summit viewpoint at Libby Flats are all a short drive away and offer some of the most accessible alpine scenery in the state. The campground typically opens in late June and closes after Labor Day, though snow can alter that window in either direction. Sites are first-come, first-served and include a picnic table, fire ring, and access to vault toilets. No hookups or potable water are available, so pack accordingly and bring layers for those chilly mountain evenings.
