Our Take

What makes CAMP 4 GROUP CAMPGROUND special

Set along the Upper McCloud River in the shadow of Mount Shasta, Camp 4 Group Campground offers a dramatic basecamp within the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. What sets this location apart is its proximity to three stunning waterfalls — Middle McCloud Falls, Lower McCloud Falls, and Upper McCloud Falls — all accessible via a scenic riverside trail that ranks among Northern California's finest short hikes. The campground is designed for group gatherings, making it an outstanding venue for family reunions, scout troops, and outdoor clubs looking to share a memorable experience in the wilderness. Ancient conifers tower overhead, and the sound of rushing water is a constant companion. The McCloud River is renowned for its trout fishing, with fly anglers traveling from across the West to test its cold, clear waters. Swimming holes near the falls provide refreshing relief on warm summer afternoons. The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when snowmelt feeds the waterfalls at their most impressive and temperatures are comfortable for hiking and swimming. Camp 4 is tailor-made for groups who want a communal outdoor experience surrounded by volcanic landscapes, old-growth forest, and some of the most photogenic waterfalls in the state.
