What makes Chalk Bluffs Campground special

Perched above the North Platte River in central Wyoming, Chalk Bluffs Campground takes its name from the striking white chalk and sandstone formations that rise dramatically from the prairie landscape. This compact 11-site campground managed by the Bureau of Reclamation offers a genuinely uncrowded outdoor experience with easy access to some of the best fishing and boating waters in the region. Each site comes equipped with a tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring, while RV-friendly parking pads accommodate larger rigs. A vault toilet serves the campground, and a boat ramp provides direct access to the North Platte River and nearby Alcova Reservoir — a magnet for walleye, rainbow trout, and smallmouth bass. The surrounding high desert terrain is home to pronghorn, mule deer, and an impressive array of raptors riding the thermals above the bluffs. Located roughly 30 miles southwest of Casper, Chalk Bluffs operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early on summer weekends is wise. The prime season stretches from late May through September, with July and August bringing warm days perfect for water recreation. Fall visits reward campers with golden cottonwoods and fewer neighbors. Bring your own water and firewood, and come prepared for Wyoming's famously spirited winds — they are part of the charm.
