Our Take

What makes DRY CREEK GROUP CAMPGROUND (Whiskeytown NRA) special

Dry Creek Group Campground brings together two of Northern California's great pleasures — warm sunshine and cool water — on the southern shore of Whiskeytown Lake within the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Located just 14 miles west of Redding in the upper Sacramento Valley, this tent-only group campground is a popular destination for organized outings, family reunions, and scout troops looking for a lakeside retreat without the chaos of larger reservoirs. The setting is classic Shasta County foothill country: rolling oak woodland, manzanita-covered slopes, and the deep blue of the lake framed against a backdrop of rugged hills. Whiskeytown Lake itself is a sparkling 3,200-acre reservoir fed by clear mountain streams, and it offers outstanding swimming, kayaking, sailing, and fishing for bass, trout, and kokanee salmon. Several waterfalls in the surrounding backcountry, including Whiskeytown Falls, make for rewarding day hikes. As a group campground, Dry Creek is designed for larger parties, so reservations are essential and should be made well in advance for summer dates. The tent-only policy keeps things simple and encourages a more traditional camping atmosphere. Summer is the prime season, with long, hot days that make the lake irresistible. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures and thinner crowds, while winter is generally too cool and wet for comfortable tent camping. Bring shade structures for midday relief in July and August — the Redding area is one of the warmest spots in California.
