Our Take
What makes FIREHOLE CANYON CAMPGROUND special
Carved into the northeastern shore of Flaming Gorge Reservoir within the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, Firehole Canyon Campground is where red-rock desert meets big blue water in the most dramatic way imaginable. The 37 sites sit near the base of towering sandstone cliffs that glow burnt orange at sunrise and deepen to maroon by sunset, creating a natural amphitheater unlike anything else in Wyoming. A swim beach and boat ramp provide immediate access to the reservoir, making this an ideal launch point for fishing, water skiing, and exploring the canyon by kayak or canoe. Lake trout, smallmouth bass, and kokanee salmon draw anglers from across the region, while the sheer canyon walls attract rock-gazing photographers and geology enthusiasts in equal measure. Because the camp is tucked down in the canyon, it stays sheltered from wind and benefits from slightly warmer temperatures than the surrounding plateau. Evenings are magical here, the cliffs hold the day's heat as the sky cycles through a palette of pink, violet, and deep indigo before the Milky Way takes over. For anyone seeking a campground with jaw-dropping geology and direct waterfront access, Firehole Canyon is a standout destination in the Intermountain West.
