Our Take
What makes French Creek Campground (WY) special
French Creek Campground is a small, tucked-away spot along Forest Road 206 in the Medicine Bow National Forest near Saratoga, Wyoming. With just eleven sites threaded through a corridor of spruce and pine beside French Creek, this is camping at its most intimate. The access road and tight site layout limit trailers to 32 feet or less, which keeps the atmosphere decidedly low-key and favors tent campers and smaller rigs looking for a genuine forest experience rather than a paved parking lot. The creek itself is the main attraction, a clear mountain stream that tumbles over rocks and offers catch-and-release fishing for small trout. Mornings here are cool and quiet, with nothing but birdsong and the rush of water to set the tone. The surrounding forest provides easy wandering for day hikers, and the Snowy Range Scenic Byway is within reach for those who want to explore the dramatic alpine terrain of the Medicine Bow Mountains, including glacial lakes and high-country wildflower meadows. French Creek is typically open from mid-June through September, weather permitting. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, and vault toilets serve the campground. There is no drinking water or utility hookups, so self-sufficiency is a must. Sites are first-come, first-served, and because of the small size and remote location, you will often have the place largely to yourself on weeknights.
