Our Take

What makes Lost Johnny Campground special

Surrounded by the rugged grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, Lost Johnny Campground sits on the shores of Hungry Horse Reservoir near the small community of Hungry Horse, Montana. Just west of the Continental Divide, this five-site campground is a hidden pocket of peace in the Flathead National Forest, where towering peaks, deep blue water, and dense evergreen forest converge in a landscape that defines the northern Rockies. The reservoir stretches for over 30 miles through a narrow mountain valley, offering outstanding boating, fishing, and swimming in summer. Cutthroat trout and bull trout lurk in the cold depths, drawing anglers who appreciate both the challenge and the scenery. The surrounding forest is laced with trails that climb into alpine country, and Glacier National Park is just a short drive to the north for those looking to explore one of the crown jewels of the national park system. The camping season typically runs from late June through September, dictated by mountain snowpack and weather. At five sites, Lost Johnny is wonderfully small and quiet. It can fill on summer weekends, so arrive early or plan a midweek trip. Nights are cool even in July, and the stars above the reservoir are staggering in their clarity. For campers seeking authentic Montana backcountry with a lakeside setting and mountain views in every direction, Lost Johnny is a find worth remembering.
