Our Take

What makes MANZANITA LAKE GROUP CAMPGROUND special

Set at the western edge of Manzanita Lake Campground in Lassen Volcanic National Park, the Manzanita Lake Group Campground puts your party within steps of one of the most photographed scenes in Northern California. The still waters of Manzanita Lake mirror the snowcapped profile of Lassen Peak on calm mornings, creating a postcard vista that never gets old. The surrounding forest of red fir and lodgepole pine provides ample shade and a sense of seclusion even when the park is busy. Group sites here are designed for larger parties, making this an excellent base for family reunions, scout troops, or organized outdoor clubs. Kayaking and catch-and-release fishing on the lake are popular daytime pursuits, and the park's geothermal features, including bubbling mudpots and steaming fumaroles at Bumpass Hell, are an easy drive away. Wildlife is abundant; black bears, mule deer, and a surprising variety of birds are regular visitors. The campground typically opens in late June and closes by mid-September, dictated by snowfall at this elevation near Mineral, California. Summer days are warm and dry, while nights cool quickly under clear mountain skies. If your group wants a volcanic landscape, pristine water, and genuine wilderness without the crowds of more famous national parks, Manzanita Lake Group Campground delivers.
