Our Take
What makes MCGREGOR LAKE CAMPGROUND special
Set along the shores of McGregor Lake within the Thompson Chain of Lakes system, McGregor Lake Campground is a quietly spectacular camping destination in Montana's Kootenai National Forest, located 53 miles southeast of Libby along U.S. Highway 2. The lake itself is a long, narrow jewel framed by forested ridgelines, and the campground sits right at the water's edge where morning mist rises off the surface and bald eagles cruise the thermals overhead. Fishing is the main attraction here — McGregor Lake supports healthy populations of rainbow trout, bull trout, and kokanee salmon, and the boat launch makes it easy to get out on the water early. Swimming, canoeing, and kayaking are all popular during the warm months, and the surrounding national forest is threaded with trails for hiking and mountain biking. The season runs roughly from late May through September, with July and August offering the warmest lake temperatures and longest days. Fall brings brilliant larch-turning gold across the hillsides and excellent fishing with fewer visitors. McGregor Lake Campground is a natural fit for fishing families, paddlers, and anyone drawn to the quiet grandeur of western Montana's lake country. Its location along Highway 2 also makes it a convenient overnight stop for travelers exploring Glacier Country or the northern Rockies corridor.
