Our Take
What makes NARROWS CAMPGROUND special
Narrows Campground occupies a striking position at the edge of New Fork Lake, where the rolling sagebrush foothills of western Wyoming give way to the soaring granite peaks of the Wind River Range. The setting is dramatic -- open skies, crystalline water, and a wall of rugged mountains that seems close enough to touch on a clear morning. This is big, honest, Western landscape, and it delivers the kind of awe that keeps people coming back year after year. The campground serves as a popular jumping-off point for trips into the Bridger Wilderness, one of the largest and most pristine wilderness areas in the lower forty-eight. Trailheads nearby lead to alpine lakes, wildflower-filled meadows, and high passes that reward backpackers and horseback riders with solitude and scenery that rivals any mountain range in the country. Day hikers will find plenty to explore as well, with routes suitable for a range of abilities. New Fork Lake itself offers excellent fishing for lake trout and rainbow trout, and non-motorized boating is a peaceful way to spend an afternoon. The campground has a modest number of sites, and the short Wyoming summer -- roughly late June through early September -- concentrates demand into a narrow window. Arrive early or reserve ahead to secure a spot. The town of Pinedale, about twenty minutes south, provides groceries, outfitters, restaurants, and a museum dedicated to the mountain man era that shaped this region's identity.
