Our Take
What makes Rob Roy Campground special
Climbing along a hillside in a tight, cascading loop beneath a canopy of mixed pines, Rob Roy Campground feels like a hideaway that only the locals know about. Perched above Rob Roy Reservoir near Laramie, Wyoming, this 69-site campground delivers the kind of high-country solitude that draws people to the Mountain West in the first place. The views from the upper sites sweep across the reservoir and out toward the open rangeland beyond, offering a front-row seat to some of Wyoming's most understated beauty. The terrain here gives each site its own character. Some are tucked into stands of lodgepole and limber pine, sheltered and shaded. Others sit higher on the hillside with wider views and more sky overhead. The cascading layout means the campground never feels flat or uniform, and the natural contours of the land create pockets of privacy throughout. Rob Roy Reservoir is popular with anglers targeting trout, and its calm surface is well-suited for canoes and small boats. The surrounding Medicine Bow National Forest opens up miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife watching. Evenings at Rob Roy are something special. The sun drops behind the western ridgeline, the pines go quiet, and the stars come out in the kind of numbers you only see at elevation, far from city lights.
