Our Take

What makes STATION CREEK CAMPGROUND special

Carved into the dramatic walls of Snake River Canyon about 27 miles southwest of Jackson, Station Creek Campground occupies one of Wyoming's most striking settings. At 5,800 feet, the canyon narrows around you with steep, sage-covered slopes and exposed rock walls while the Snake River rushes past just below, its cold waters teeming with native cutthroat trout that draw fly fishers from across the country. The proximity to Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park makes Station Creek an outstanding base camp at a fraction of the cost of staying in town. From here, the Tetons are roughly a 40-minute drive north, and Yellowstone National Park is within a long but rewarding day trip. Closer to camp, the canyon itself offers excellent whitewater rafting and kayaking, with several outfitters operating put-ins nearby. The campground provides a handful of riverside sites shaded by cottonwood and willow, with vault toilets and fire rings. There are no hookups or piped water, so plan to bring your own. The setting is rugged and exposed in places, and afternoon canyon winds can pick up, so secure your gear. The best time to visit is June through September, with July being peak season. Sites are first-come, first-served and tend to fill by midday on summer weekends, so an early arrival is your best strategy. Station Creek is a raw, beautiful launching point for exploring the greater Jackson Hole region.
