Our Take

What makes SULPHUR CAMPGROUND special

Sulphur Campground sits at the scenic confluence of the Stillwater Fork and the Hayden River, roughly 39 miles south of Evanston, Wyoming, along the celebrated Mirror Lake Scenic Byway. This is high Uinta country — a landscape of broad alpine meadows, crystalline streams, and dense stands of spruce and lodgepole pine that feels wonderfully removed from the everyday world. The Mirror Lake Scenic Byway is one of the most beautiful mountain drives in the Intermountain West, and Sulphur Campground makes an ideal base for exploring it at a leisurely pace. The surrounding Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest offers outstanding fly fishing in the Stillwater Fork, with brook trout and cutthroat trout drawing anglers from across the region. Trails departing from nearby trailheads lead into the High Uintas Wilderness, where rugged peaks and alpine lakes reward those willing to hike a few miles in. The camping season here is compressed by elevation and snowpack — late June through mid-September is the reliable window, with wildflower season peaking in July. Sulphur Campground is well-suited for fishing enthusiasts, families who enjoy stream play and scenic drives, and hikers looking for a comfortable front-country camp with genuine backcountry access just up the trail. Cool nights at this elevation make it a welcome summer escape from the heat of the lowland valleys.
