Our Take

What makes WOODBINE CAMPGROUND special

For campers who measure a destination's appeal by how far it sits from the nearest traffic light, Woodbine Campground delivers in spectacular fashion. Located near Nye, Montana, on the edge of the vast Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, this remote campground offers the kind of raw, mountain-country experience that defines the Northern Rockies. Granite peaks, alpine meadows, and dense conifer forests surround you on all sides, and the Stillwater River rushes nearby with some of the finest trout water in the state. The real draw here, beyond the campground's own peaceful setting, is its position roughly three hours from Yellowstone National Park via the legendary Beartooth Highway, widely considered one of America's most dramatic mountain drives. That combination of wilderness solitude and proximity to a world-class scenic route makes Woodbine an ideal basecamp for a multiday adventure. Sites are rustic and limited in number, with vault toilets and fire rings but no hookups or running water. Bring everything you need, including bear-safe food storage. The access road is manageable for most vehicles but not suited for oversized rigs. Summer is the only practical season here, with the campground typically accessible from late June through September depending on snowpack. Reservations may not be required, but checking current conditions with the Custer Gallatin National Forest office before heading out is always a smart move.
